Background:

Alachua County and the City of Gainesville have a well-established victim services partnership. Victim Services & Rape Crisis Center has been working closely with the Gainesville Police Department as well as other area law enforcement agencies since 1977.  In 1999, after identifying the need to enhance services, but not wanting to compete for grant funds, Alachua County Victim Services & Rape Crisis Center sought additional Victim of Crime Act (VOCA) funds to hire a victim advocate that would be placed in the Gainesville Police Department to work alongside detectives.  These two (2) VOCA funded advocates were added in 2001 and 2019.  The City added a victim advocate through a grant with the Violence against Women Act (VAWA) in 2003.  The VAWA grant has been renewed multiple times.  As part of the inter-local agreement, the County employs the VAWA funded victim advocate position. The County’s role is to hire, train and supervise the victim advocates based at the Gainesville Police Department, including the VAWA position.
