Background:

The Freedom Center has been designated by Alachua County Emergency Management as a hurricane evacuation shelter.  Therefore, the State of Florida has offered to provide a $166,000 reimbursement grant to hurricane harden the facility by upgrading the windows and doors and installing a generator to meet State Shelter guidelines.

The grant requires the County to make the building available as a public hurricane evacuation shelter upon request by our local Emergency Management agency.

All systems must meet or exceed wind load requirements of American Society of Civil Engineers’ Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures standard 7 (ASCE 7), Risk Category IV and Exposure C.

In FY18, our Community Support Services was the recipient of a similar grant to hurricane harden that facility which houses our 311 operation.
