Background:

On December 11, 2012 a BoCC Motion regarding 3 minute history readings” passed: "Refer to the Historical Committee - should the following, for example, a short three minute reading of primary documents relating to local history be part of most County Commission Regular Meetings.  Following extensive discussion and on-going research, this quarterly reading series began in March 2014. While the Historical Commission continued to meet virtually during the pandemic there was some interruption to these readings but the group is now scheduling more in the near future.

This is one of the brief ‘3 Minute Histories’ prepared by the Alachua County Historical Commission to highlight historical events and places of local interest.  Today’s reading by Melanie Barr is based on a State Historic Marker that will be added to the Gainesville Woman’s Club to commemorate the 100th anniversary, and scheduled in advance of  a special marker dedication event planned on Nov. 14, 2021
