Background:
At it’s October 24, 2022, the Metropolitan Transportation Planning Organization for the Gainesville Urbanized Area requested that the City of Gainesville and Alachua County send letters to the Florida Department of Transportation and CSX, Inc. requesting the restoration of passenger rail service to Alachua County. Historically, rail service ran along the US 301 corridor from Ocala to the south with a stop in Waldo. Currently, the closest passenger rail stop is in Palatka. Staff has drafted a letter for the Chair’s signature.
