Background:

The American Counseling Association promotes public confidence and trust in the counseling profession so that professionals can further assist their clients and students in dealing with the challenges life presents. The American Counseling Association services professional counselors in the U.S. and in 50 other countries including Europe, Latin America, the Philippines and the Virgin Islands.

The Mobile Response Team Coordinator will be presenting twice, once on How to Help: Crisis Response to Gun Violence and Mass Shootings which focuses on crisis competencies essential to the foundational knowledge that all entry-level counselors should have. Other professional counselors also benefit as most often do not receive formal training to engage in crisis-related work and often feel unprepared or incapable to assist in these situations.  The employee will be presenting a second time Suicide Ideation After a Mass Shooting: Stories and Journeys of Survivors.  Mass shootings are no longer an infrequent occurrence, the numbers of fatalities and survivors are growing from these tragic incidents. In the aftermath of a mass shooting, survivors may experience suicide ideation; however, it is often overlooked due to the focus on the traumatic event.
