Background:

Over the past 23 years, Alachua County has acted as a Host County for the annual FDEP Cooperative Household Hazardous Waste Collection events in several neighboring counties. The current agreement includes collection events in the counties of Lafayette, Gilchrist, Columbia, Dixie, Baker, Union, Nassau, Putnam, and Bradford. The County has separate interlocal agreements with each neighboring county and these agreements are in effect until FDEP discontinues the appropriation of funding or are terminated by the host or neighboring county.

The FDEP agreement is cost reimbursable and for Fiscal Year 2022, the approved budget for the program was $176,836. Under the Interlocal agreements, the neighboring counties are responsible for reimbursable costs above the FDEP approved budget. The inclusion of an additional collection event and higher than anticipated participation from Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, Nassau, and Union counties resulted in $16,927.00 of unanticipated revenue.
