Title

Request approval for the Cade Museum of Creativity and Invention to Reallocate Awarded FY20 Grant Funding

End

Presenter:

Jessica Hurov

Description:

The Cade Museum has an adaptive plan to reallocate awarded FY20 Nature and Culture Destination Enhancement Grant funding to create new experiences in response to programmatic changes due to COVID-19.

The Cade’s FY20 Nature and Culture Destination Enhancement Grant funding included $65,000 for marketing and costs associated with a temporary exhibit called “The Brain: The World Inside Your Head” with a $15,000 deposit already paid and reimbursed.

The Cade is unable to bring in the exhibit this summer as planned due to the ongoing health crisis and recommended prohibitions on museum interactives. Instead, the Cade requests to bring in a different exhibit, a 1,000 sq ft indoor ice skating rink, from June 29 to August 27 and subsequently exhibit The Brain in September - December. In accordance with their application, the awarded funds would also be used to support key efforts and exhibitions that bring visitors to the museum.

This proposal requires reallocating $34,656.39 of the funds planned for The Brain exhibit to the indoor ice skating rink, with the remaining funds from the original grant request for the exhibit ($15,343.61) to pay for the first phase of The Brain exhibit.

The plan to create an indoor ice skating rink exemplifies resiliency and creativity in programmatic changes as our community works to support and re-establish our tourism-generating cultural institutions, and provides a unique opportunity for Visit Gainesville, Alachua County to market this new attraction to tourists.

Approve the First Amendment to the Cade’s FY20 Grant Agreement to reallocation $34,656.39 of the Cade’s FY20 grant funding to support the marketing and associated costs of the ice skating rink and make the legislative finding that said use of TDT funds is primarily related to the advancement and promotion of tourism in Alachua County.
