Background:

The University of Florida Historic Preservation program completed the documentation (attached) of two historic structures in Gainesville and submitted the required nomination forms.  The buildings are the Old Mount Carmel Baptist Church in the Pleasant Street Historic District, and the University Lutheran Center along W. University Avenue.  Due to the short notice in advance of the State review support letters were approved only by the County Historical Commission (attached).  The County, along with the City of Gainesville, received correspondence (attached) noting that the nominations will be forwarded to the National Park Service following endorsement of the listing by the State review board.  The support by the ACHC and the City Historic Preservation Board will be noted in the report submitted by State staff although with Covid precautions and file size limits the ACHC letter will not be forwarded. Staff recommends a letter from BoCC will be more influential as evidence of County support when the matter is reviewed at the federal level.

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation's historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America's historic and archeological resources.
