Background:
This bid is for the sale of pine timber on Barr Hammock Preserve. Timber is to be harvested as a part of land stewardship to enhance the ecological values of the Preserve through facilitating the re-establishment of uneven-aged, open pine forests with a diverse native groundcover as outlined in the Board-approved management plan.
On December 11, 2018 the BOCC approved and awarded this timber sale (Contract # 11003) to Alford Timber, Inc. Due to market conditions, a six-month extension was approved on November 4, 2019. Market conditions had not improved by the time this 1st amendment expired and Alford Timber defaulted on the contract, necessitating the re-bid of this timber sale under Bid 21-985.
The harvest is the first step in the restoration of the overstocked pine stands on Barr Hammock Preserve and will provide additional funds for restoration and site development activities on the Preserve.
The harvest is consistent with the Barr Hammock Preserve Management Plan and the Alachua County Timber Business Plan.
