Background:
The County is receiving grant funding from the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) through the Protect Florida Springs Tag Grant program. Alachua County has previously received numerous FWC tag (license plate) grants administered through the Wildlife Foundation of Florida, Inc. beginning in state fiscal year 2012/2013 focusing on springs protection in the Santa Fe River basin. This is a reimbursement grant and requires an interfund loan for the full amount of the grant, $15,000. The grant is effective for a period of 12 months, beginning in January 2023 and ending in December 2024. Revenue for this grant will be booked under fund number 260.55.5511.337.3000 and expenses will be booked under fund number 260.55.5511.537.3400.
This project is titled PFS 23-13 - “Freedom Lawns” Social Marketing Behavior Change Campaign and it is Project Number 3235501. Alachua County Environmental Protection Department (ACEPD) proposes to build upon our successful fertilizer and aquifer awareness campaigns to promote multi-species lawns and landscapes. This project will include a literature review to summarize existing efforts such as, but not limited to, Freedom Lawns, Back Yard National Park, and Audubon’s Yards for Birds. The campaign design (terminology, images, messaging, etc.) will be research based and firmly rooted in social marketing principles. Campaign implementation during this first year will likely focus on social and print media, as the timeline may not afford television and radio programming. ACEPD will engage local partners during campaign development and implementation in hopes of creating a campaign with multiple messengers and a broad reach. The campaign will be evaluated through ACEPD’s annual survey efforts and may be modified for future use as needed. Matching funds will include $5,000 from fund 001-5511 to augment the media campaign and at least $5,000 from fund 087-5511/087-5519 for an on-line survey to evaluate various FY23 campaigns.
Please note that the grant application requested $30,000, but only $15,000 was allocated to the project. The revised budget has been approved by the funding agency and is provided as the last page of the attached grant application and acceptance package and have been reflected in this summary.
