Background:
The 5,797.5-acre Lochloosa Slough Preserve, located south of Hawthorne, and east of Highway 301, was acquired by Alachua County Forever program through two acquisitions. The first on December 12th, 2019, for 1,861.1 acres, and the second on January 24th, 2022, for 3,936.3 acres; both funded through Wild Spaces and Public Places surtax funds. Management goals for the preserve include restoring diverse longleaf pine habitat through re-planting harvested areas, prescribed burning, and invasive plant management, protecting the diverse and numerous wetlands on the preserve, and providing public recreational access once the management planning process is completed.
