Background:

The Florida Highway Patrol has requested that the Board of County Commissioners support legislation to designate a portion of I-75, between Mile Markers 399 and 404 as the “Sergeant William T. Bishop Memorial Highway.”  Section 334.071, Florida Statutes, authorizes the Board of County Commissioners to adopt a resolution in supporting honorary road designations within the County.

Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law on July 1, 2019 CS/CS/CS/HB 385 - Transportation Bill which states, “that portion of I-75 (26260000) between mile markers 399 and 404 in Alachua County is designated as the “Sergeant William T. Bishop Memorial Highway.”

On June 17, 2017, Sergeant Bishop was tragically killed in the line of duty when he was struck by a motor vehicle while conducting a crash investigation on I-75 near the 403 mile marker southbound.
