Background:

The Medical Examiners expenses for FY18/19 has exceeded its adopted budget of $1,110,620. Each year the Medical Examiner and the University of Florida, College of Medicine submit a budget to the County for Administrative expenses and cost associated with autopsies. This budget is based on estimates of the number of autopsies that are anticipated to be performed as well as accompanying required tests. While a portion of the Medical Examiner’s budget is for fixed operational expenses, approximately fifty percent of the budget is dependent on professional services costs including the number of deaths in the County and the number of tests required to make a final determination of cause of death.

Chapter 406 of the Florida Statutes requires the Board of County Commissioners in each Medical Examiner's District to establish and pay reasonable salaries, fees and expenses to the District Medical Examiner and his/her associates.
