Background:

At the Dec. 10 Commission Meeting, the Board unanimously requested staff to initiate the process of naming the boat ramp at the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Park in honor of former Commissioner Kate Barnes. The dedication of the boat ramp to Kate Barnes will be for the duration of Alachua County’s management of the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and will serve the internal purpose of identifying the boat ramp and aiding in the continued operation of the boat ramp pursuant to the County’s sub-lease of the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Park. This dedication is in compliance with County policy (attached) and in recognition of the substantial non-financial or humanitarian contributions made by Ms. Barnes.  Staff recommends the name “Kate Barnes Boat Ramp.”  Another potential name is the “K. Barnes Boat Ramp.” Any signage will be in compliance with the terms of the County’s sub-lease with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
