Background:
The BoCC created the Children's Services Advisory Board (CSAB) in May 2016, to make recommendations regarding creating a special district, identifying innovative and creative programs, and to make funding recommendations for new services for children from birth to age 5. Based on those recommendations the BoCC awarded funding and entered into agreements for three new children's services initiatives. The NewboRN nurse home visit program seeks to assure mom and her new baby are safe, healthy, and connected with needed resources. The CHILD Center is a pilot demonstration site with a twofold purpose. First, it provides high quality early care and education for up to 57 children in an economically deprived geographic area of Alachua County. It also serves as an incubator, helping leading experts in early childhood development better understand barriers to accessing and providing high quality care and education. These "lessons learned" in professional development are shared with five other early learning sites through the implementation of practiced based coaching. The Healthy Social and Emotional Development and Family Support (SED) program is designed to provide families with information on children's social and emotional development, prevent the on-set of behavioral problems, and intervene with children experiencing challenging behaviors often the result of multiple adverse childhood experiences.
