Depending upon the GRU rental lamp type, LED lights are generally more energy efficient and cost effective over high pressure sodium lights.  Staff are working with GRU to swap out all high pressure sodium lights for LEDs.

Background:

In prior fiscal years, GRU Light Emitting Diodes (LED) rental lights cost more to install and operate compared to High Pressure Sodium (HPS).  Recent changes in rental rate structure now make LED rental lights more cost effective compared to HPS.  At the Manager’s direction county staff initiated a high-level engineering review of all GRU rented parking lot lights in late 2018.   The scope of work looked at lamp rental rates but also into the cost effectiveness of the County owning/metering the lights along with a solar powered option. The report recommends that the County should continue to rent rather than own parking lot lights and that they be LED over HPS.
