Background:

In 2014, Alachua County assumed control of the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) located at the Leveda Brown Environmental Park which was previously operated by SP Recycling. This facility processes and markets a portion of the residential and commercial recyclable materials generated within Alachua County. Hernando County wishes to deliver their recyclable materials to the Alachua County MRF for processing and marketing. It is estimated that approximately 4,600 tons of recyclable material will be delivered each year from Hernando County. Currently, the Alachua County MRF processes roughly 20,000 tons annually. Staff is confident that this additional material can be processed at the Alachua County MRF without affecting the ability to process Alachua County’s material.
