Background:

At its meeting of December 3, 2019, the Board approved a motion for staff to draft an ordinance prohibiting single-use disposable straws in the unincorporated part of Alachua County. The language of this ordinance mirrors the City of Gainesville’s straw ban that went into effect January 1, 2020.

Food service providers will not be able to sell or use plastic straws or stirrers.

Single use plastic straws and stirrers are generally defined as being a disposable, one-time use item made up of petroleum polymer.

There are exceptions for persons with disabilities, medical and dental facilities, hospitals and nursing homes.

Pre-packaged beverages with straws and boxes of pre-packaged straws/stirrers for retail sale are also exempted.
