Background:

Alachua County Historical Commission (ACHC) provides leadership in identifying, preserving and interpreting the County's history and historic sites. The Historical Commission is advisory to BoCC on matters regarding County history.  The Mission of the ACHC is to “Promote, Preserve, and protect Alachua County’s historic resources.” Eleven (11) “Citizen at Large” members with knowledge of local history as a key criteria for appointment.  Applicants are encouraged from local history organizations. As often as possible applicants with specific backgrounds including Historic Preservation, Architecture or Engineering, and Preservation Law will be appointed to serve. One (1) alternate member chosen at large, with the same criteria as above.  The Alachua County Historical Commission goes back to at least 1972, but most recently its modified operation was created by Resolution 11-14 in April 2011. Currently the sunset date for the Advisory Board is December 31, 2022  as adopted by Resolution 19-32 in March 2019. The Commission has 11 members plus 1 Alternate.  Members serve three-year terms. One of the current vacancies is a partial term following the resignation of a previous member whose professional obligations created schedule conflicts with the meetings.
