Background:

In December 2019, the Environmental Protection Department launched the seventh annual “Saving My Alachua” Environmental Art Contest and Calendar, open to Alachua County students K-12th grade (Attachment 1). Students were asked to submit artwork reflecting their interest in the local environment and addressing one of the following topics: water conservation, stormwater pollution, natural habitat protection, wilderness and wildlife protection, and proper disposal of toxic waste. The Department received 259 entries from 14 Alachua County schools and centers. Twenty-nine winners were selected for this year’s awards, including 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each grade category, as well as “Calendar Selection” awards for those entries that will be featured in a 2021 “Saving My Alachua” Calendar (Attachment 2). Unlike other years, the winners will be recognized virtually at the May 26th Board of County Commissioners meeting. Ribbons and certificates will be mailed to the winners, along with their artwork once the display period ends. The virtual recognition will be in the form of a short PowerPoint video which should last about five minutes.
