Background:

The County Historical Commission is an advisory board that addresses the goal to preserve, protect, enhance and support historic resources and properties within Alachua County.  The board is comprised of twelve citizen appointees (eleven citizen and large members and one alternate member) who typically meet ten times annually to discuss and take action regarding the protection of historic resources.  The group works directly on state historic markers, protection of historic cemeteries, public presentations, historic tour information, and members represent numerous historic organizations throughout Alachua County.  When feasible the Historical Commission and staff liaison assist with the protection of historic buildings through designation on the National Register of Historic Places and identifying possible funding sources.
