Recommended Action:
Recommended Action
Select Alachua County’s first Poet Laureate and authorize the Manager to negotiate and sign an agreement with the selected Poet Laureate per the terms established by the Board on June 25, 2019. The term would be February 1, 2020 - January 31, 2022.

Prior Board Motions:
Jun. 25, 2019 - adopt the poet laureate motion as presented:
(1) The Poet Laureate’s term will begin and end on a date as provided in an Agreement approved by the County Attorney and adopted by the County Commission. In the Agreement, details such as the ownership and rights of publication, royalties, and related issues will be provided. Issues that may arise regarding the performance of duties, and how they will be resolved, will be provided for.
(2) The County Manager will designate a County staff person to be the liaison to the Poet Laureate. The liaison’s duties will include informing the Poet Laureate of upcoming opportunities, events, and memorials during which the Poet Laureate may participate.
(3) Modify the Qualifications/Selection Criteria as follows:
• Alachua County Resident
• Experience with Literary Activities
• Letters of Recommendation - at least two
• Statement of Interest, 250 words maximum
• Poetry Sample - at least two
• Resume
(4) Modify the Requirements in the Call to Artists as follows:
• Approve and authorize the County to use poems created for Alachua County as Poet Laureate on electronic and printed mediums.
• Participate in events by writing and reading poetry, as the County’s Poet Laureate.
• Submit web and social media content to highlight the literary arts.
• Mentor youth interested in poetry.
• Approve and authorize Alachua County to review poetry selections in advance for Poet Laureate programs and events.
(5) And include all other staff and Arts Council recommendations as presented in the original motion and backup materials

Background:
In accordance with Ordinance 18-07, the Arts Council of Alachua County reviewed the nine submittals and narrowed them to five, who were invited for oral presentations. The group unanimously approved the following ranking:
1. E. Stanley Richardson
2. Terri Bailey
3. Michelle Heidenrich Barnes
The Board is being requested to discuss and select the County’s first Poet Laureate.
