Background:

The Alachua County Historical Commission (ACHC) was directed by BoCC to consider possible names for the property located along US 441 (between Paynes Prairie to the north and Micanopy to the south).  The property was formerly used by the YMCA and known as Camp McConnell.

The ACHC discussed the matter at a meeting in June.  On July 13 a final recommendation will be made by ACHC based on the list under discussion (from June), and other input received from the public.  Email communication from the Seminole Tribe is included as an attachment.  This states “Cuscowilla might be particularly appropriate”

This information received following their June meeting will be provided to ACHC:

RE: Seminole Name For YMCA Camp McConnell

In response to a Seminole Name for YMCA Camp McConnell: “Neamathia Restoration Grounds“ The First Seminole War (1817-1818) was precipitated when a Seminole chief named, Neamathla, warned U.S. troops not to trespass on their hunting grounds.

The final recommendation made by ACHC on July 13 will be communicated to the County Manager just prior to the BoCC meeting the following day.
