Background:

In accordance with Florida Statute, Alachua County contracts with the Florida Department of Health for operation of the health department facility and programs located in Alachua County.  The Alachua County Health Department was created in order to satisfy the State of Florida's legislative intent to promote public health, control and eradicate preventable diseases and to provide primary health care for special populations through the creation of County Health Departments throughout the State. The State Legislature encourages that counties and the State of Florida Department of Health both contribute funds to the operation of the County Health Departments.  Through this partnership, the Alachua County Health Department provides environmental health, communicable disease control, and primary health care services for residents of Alachua County.  The overall goal is to improve health, reduce the need for inpatient hospitalizations and lessen the number of hospital emergency room admissions.
